We kept in mind that eventually we would have to bring this topic to discussion. Actually, there are many things that make Montreal a cool city to visit. On the other end, there are things that are not so good or are no longer good.
So here we are, trying to come up with 10 good and 10 bad things about Montreal. These are things that characterize Montreal and attribute to this fascinating city its unique signature. So if you are planning to visit Montreal any time soon, take these notes down.
The 10 Good things about Montreal:
Architecture
Here we have to be selective. When we refer to architecture, we refer to few old buildings, churches. Few examples: Notre-Dame Basilica, St-Joseph Oratory, the Bank of Montreal branch in the old port.
All of these buildings represent the highest degree of architectural heritage. One of a kind, each landmark links Montreal to its European roots.
As cities modernize with time, the connection with the past becomes essential to safeguard the importance of the origin.
People
A rather obvious choice. Not to downplay the common friendliness of Canadians, Montreal’s crowd earn a special mark here. One of the reasons to that is its rich historical heritage and mixture. Well, actually it’s comprehensive mixture of different racial backgrounds and the general easy going attitude of people from here. There are French Canadians, often referred as Quebecers, English Canadians and people from practically every country of the world.
Nightlife
There are three main avenues for nightlife in Downtown Montreal: Crescent Street, St-Laurent Street and St-Denis Street. Each of these three are unique. Crescent is filled with pubs and few disco clubs.
Crescent is closer to the big hotels and attracts mainly the tourists. St-Laurent is the main hangout place of the English speaking population. St-Laurent is filled with glamorous resto bars such as the Globe and vibrant upscale night clubs.
St-Laurent attracts the young tourists that enjoy the mix of dynamic music and alcohol.

St-Laurent is also the place to meet the rare breed of the hottest girls….actually, the biggest concentration of them in a single spot.
St-Denis is more of a cult street that attracts French Speaking Community, a unique of its kind as well. On St-Denis, there are fewer upscale places but a very warm atmosphere.
Cops
Yeah you heard it right. Cops in Montreal are somewhat cool. Fundamentally, what had just been said makes little sense. However, Montreal’s cops are an exception. Before being Cops, they are people and are very flexible. They talk, they listen and, if you are being nice to them after they caught you…with a speeding ticket, you may actually get away with a smaller fine or no fine at all. Be nice to them and you’ll see the difference.
Cops in other North American cities incorporate more of robotics and less human characteristics. They catch you with something, they will inform you of what you have done wrong and quickly issue you a fine and, all of this with practically no human interaction.
Unique Signature Places
There are few places in Montreal that are unique. There are two unique restaurants that offer unmatched experience:
Au Noir: People eat in the dark. All the personnel are blind and this way the concept aims at showing people that they could enjoy the food without looking at it. Actually, when one of the sense is absent, the human mind attributes bigger significance to the remaining senses.
Hunted House Restaurant: A restaurant where people can eat in the atmosphere of a hunted house with ghosts and an incredible show that go along.
Dic Ann’s: A hamburger joint with special presentation. Hard to describe with words. One has to taste it to appreciate it. A unique of its kind: 50% odds of either falling in love with it or not appreciating it at all.
Schwartz/Reuben’s: Smoke Meat Amateurs would have the opportunity to taste one of world’s best smoke meat.
Poutine
People visiting Montreal: Trying poutine is a must. French Fries with Cheese and Gravy Sauce is a simple poutine. With time, Poutine has evolved is now served in more than 50 different varieties. There are few restaurants downtown that take the pride of making the best poutine.
Politics
Some find it annoying. Yet, we find it amusing…Over 40% of the population wanted Quebec to separate from the rest of Canada. So now picture yourself sitting in one of the cult pubs of Montreal and having a discussion with one of the separatists about Quebec, Canada and USA. Without having to insult each other, this conversation can actually be quiet amusing.
Women
Montreal is a Hot Spot for the biggest gathering of smoking hot girls in one densely populated area. Don’t believe me? Visit St-Laurent street on a busy week-end.
Old Port
One of the most exiting places to visit, especially during summer time: A perfect blend of artist entertainment (painters, artists, clowns), pubs/clubs/resto bars with a terrace and unique views, finest art galleries and art workshops, steakhouses, boutique hotels and the quay (naturally).
Cirque de Soleil
Although there is hardly any place on this planet where they have not yet toured, their shows in Montreal are somewhat more explosive.
Oh yeah, even Canadiens of Montreal play better when they are home. Happy staying in Montreal.
